LUBMIN, Germany, April 15 (UPI) -- Construction of the first phase of a 50-mile section of the Nord Stream in Germany kicked off Thursday in the coastal town of Lubmin, the consortium announced.

Georg Nowack, the project manager for Nord Stream in Germany said the construction plans for the pipeline are on schedule.

"This is the best precondition for reaching the lofty goals we have set for the pipeline project," he said.

Russia aims to diversify its gas transit options through the dual Nord Stream pipeline through the Baltic Sea. The project cleared a series of environmental and regulatory hurdles in 2009 and early this year, paving the way for the start of construction.

Nord Stream said it invested more than $130 million in surveys and route planning as well as national environmental impact assessments in the Baltic Sea region.

Onshore construction for Nord Stream continues through May followed by the laying of around 1,800 feet in the Bay of Greifswald.

More than 26 million European households are expected to receive gas supplied from Nord Stream when first gas deliveries commence in 2011.

The project is expected to cost around $10 billion.
